Certificate in TESOL


The undergraduate certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a 15-credit-hour program which provides students with the basic pedagogical background needed to teach English to non-native speakers. The certificate can lead to opportunities such as:

 

  • Teaching English as a foreign language in overseas schools, colleges, or universities;

  • Teaching English as a second language to international students studying in the U.S.; 

  • Teaching English to bilingual/bicultural English Language Learner (ELL) and Limited English Proficient (LEP) students in public school systems and adult education programs.

Required courses (9 credit-hours)

  • ENGL 4043 TESOL

  • ENGL 4180 Internship in TESOL

  • ENGL 4013 English Grammar

Two elective course (6 credit-hours). Choose from:

  • CIED 4133 Introduction to K-12 English Language Learners

  • CIED 4813 Second Language Acquisition Research and Pedagogy

  • ENGL 2243 Language, Text, and Culture

  • ENGL 2443 Languages of the World

  • ENGL 3063 Introduction to Linguistics: Exploring Human Language

  • ENGL 4003 History of the English Language

  • ENGL 4033 Discourse Analysis

  • ENGL 4073 Introduction to Sociolinguistics

  • ENGL 4080 Studies in Linguistics

  • ENGL 4083 Applied Linguistics

  • ENGL 4093 (D,S): Language in America

  • ENGL 4143 Language and Technology

  • ENGL 4520 Problems in English

Note: The TESOL Certificate does not carry with it certification for public school employment. Students wishing such certification must meet specific state and university requirements.
