Composition & Rhetoric

Both MA and PhD students may elect Composition and Rhetoric as one of their examination areas. They may choose to write the thesis or dissertation in Composition and Rhetoric or retain it as a secondary specialization..

The program at OSU also offers an integrated approach to writing studies through the Rhetoric and Professional Writing emphasis. Students choosing this option usually combine the study of Composition and Rhetoric with a related field, such as Technical Writing, TESOL, or Linguistics. (See requirements for PhD in Rhetoric and Professional Writing.) The program also provides opportunities to study Composition and Rhetoric in conjunction with Literature, Film, Creative Writing, or other areas.

Composition and Rhetoric is one of the most in-demand fields within the broader discipline of English. Specialists may expect many openings as faculty and administrators at colleges and universities in addition to opportunities as communications experts in government and private industry.

Those electing Composition and Rhetoric as a secondary area will find that their training significantly enhances their marketability as future faculty members in other fields.
