Programs Offered
The Creative Writing Program
focuses on the vital
relationship between fictional and poetic coursework in both writing
and literary study. Concentrations in poetry writing and fiction writing
are available in the BA, MA, and PhD degrees. Graduate students
submit original creative works prefaced by a critical introduction rather
than a scholarly thesis or dissertation. Doctoral students have the option
of testing in the Practical Poetics and Fictional Rhetoric comprehensive
examination area.
The Screen Studies Program
focuses on the history, theory, and aesthetics of cinema as well as its cultural and political impact. The program is notable for its flexibility, encouraging students, for example, to combine work in the history of film with the study of popular culture, or to combine film studies with television studies, literary research, and critical theory. Undergraduate students may elect the Film Option as part of their Bachelor's degree in English, while graduate students may pursue both the Master's degree and the PhD with emphasis in Screen Studies.
The Literature Program
offers undergraduate and
advanced study that is both flexible and diverse. Graduate
students can design their own programs and develop expertise in any areas
of British and American literature. They can supplement their primary
studies with training in related fields, such as creative writing, screen studies,
linguistics, composition, and technical writing. The Department
awards the B. A., the MA, and the PhD.
The Composition &
Rhetoric Program
provides training in writing and rhetoric for
undergraduates, while offering graduate students the opportunity to develop expertise
in historical and contemporary rhetoric, discourse analysis, pedagogy, and literacy
studies.
The Teaching
English as a Second Language & Linguistics Program
offers a comprehensive program leading to both an MA in English with
an option in Teaching English as a Second Language and a PhD in English
with a specialization in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) &/or
Linguistics.
The Technical Writing
Program
trains top-notch
researchers and advanced practitioners in the field of technical communication,
using the most up-to-date tools, methodologies, and theories. Students
learn skills in rhetorical analysis and critical thinking that are crucial
to their professional success as technical communicators, high-level
managers, and academics.
