SPEAK Test

The Purpose of the SPEAK Test is to determine the spoken language proficiency of speakers of English as a Second Language (ESL). The test is administered in a language laboratory and takes about half an hour. It is divided into seven sections, each of which is evaluated for two or more of the following categories: pronunciation, grammar, fluency, and comprehensibility.

The following information is taken from the "SPEAK Examinee Handbook and Sample Questions ": When you take the Speak test, you will be given a test book and asked to read a set of general directions before you begin. Each section of the test has special instructions... It is a good idea to become familiar with the instructions before the day of the test. The whole test is recorded. The voices on the test tape will ask you various questions. When you answer, you speak into a microphone, and answer will be recorded on another tape. To help you overcome any nervousness, you may wish to practice recording your voice before the day of the test.

SPEAK Tests are given the week before the Fall and Spring semesters begin. They are given in the language lab in Gunderson Hall 205. If you want to take the SPEAK test on campus you do not have to register in advance. Just arrive early on the day of the test and sign up. The cost of this test is $75, payable by check (make checks payable to OSU) or cash at the time of the test.  If your department is paying for the test, the department can arrange to pay the Graduate College directly.
