ITA Test

The ITA test is five minute (timed) presentation given to an audience of test raters and other students who are taking the test.  After the presentation is finished, there is a 3-5 minute period for questions from the audience.

The raters consist of English department faculty and undergraduate students. If your department sends a faculty representative, that person may also ask questions about your presentation.

ITA test presentation:

  • The student teaches a short academic lesson in a chosen field of study.
  • The lesson should be a key point drawn from introductory chapters in a freshman textbook.
  • The test judges how well you can teach, not content knowledge. This includes explaining information and answering questions from the audience.
  • Questions from the audience are the typical kinds of questions that students ask.
  • Questions may come from undergraduates, English faculty\or your department representative.

Timing (maximum time for your presentation is 5 minutes):

  • Plan (and practice) your presentation to last about 4.5 minutes. Practice is the only way to be sure of meeting the time requirement.
  • If you are in mid-sentence when the timer rings, you may finish your sentence, but you will not be allowed to continue beyond just a few seconds after the timer rings.

The ITA Test is given the week before the Fall and Spring semesters begin. Only those students who have passed the SPEAK test (50 or higher), TSE (50 or higher), or the Speaking Skills section of the TOEFL iBT (26 or higher) are eligible to take the test. Students are scheduled for the test by their department. The schedule of the ITA test will be posted outside 205 Morrill Hall the day before the test. Please see the Schedules page for the exact date of the test. There is no charge for this test.

IMPORTANT: Students who have a passing score on the TSE or the Speaking Skills section of the TOEFL iBT, and therefore are not taking the SPEAK test, need to contact Dr. Gene Halleck and provide proof of the score so that they are included on the schedule for the ITA test.
