OSU to be the site of the World/Picture conference

October 26-27, 2007 are the dates for the World/Picture conference to be held at OSU. The theme of this years conference is "Media and Ethics." The conference will bring together first-rate screen studies scholars from around the world and will feature two keynote speakers: Joan Copjec and Lee Edelman.

Copjec will give a keynote address titled "The Censorship of Intimacy: Kiarostami’s Cinema” on Friday, October 26 at 5 p.m. in the Noble Research Center, room 108.

Joan Copjec is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at SUNY Buffalo. She is also the author of two books:  Read My Desire: Lacan against the Historicists (MIT, 1994) and Imagine There’s No Woman; Ethics and Sublimation (MIT, 2002). A former editor of the influential journal October, she has also edited numerous books, including: October: The First Decade (MIT, 1987; with A. Michelson, R. Krauss, D. Crimp); Jacques Lacan’s Television (Norton, 1990); Shades of Noir (Verso, 1993); Supposing the Subject (Verso, 1994); Radical Evil (Verso, 1996); and Giving Ground:  The Politics of Propinquity (Verso, 1999, with M. Sorkin).

Lee Edelman is Chair and Fletcher Professor of English at Tufts University. In addition to numerous essays, he is author of three books: No Future: Queer Theory and the Death Drive (Duke University Press, 2004); Homographesis: Essays in Gay Literary and Cultural Theory (Routledge, 1994) and Transmemberment of Song: Hart Crane's Anatomies of Rhetoric and Desire (Stanford University Press, 1987).

Edelman will give a talk entitled “Learning Nothing: Bad Education," on Saturday, October 27 at 4:30 p.m. in the Noble Research Center, room 106.

Five OSU English department faculty members will also be presenting at the conference: Linda Austin, Brian Price, Meghan Sutherland, Hugh Manon, and Martin Wallen, as well as PhD student Scott Krzych.

The event is free to any in the OSU community.
