Dr. Jones receives Phoenix Award

The Oklahoma State University English Department is proud to announce that Dr. Edward Jones is the winner of the 2008 Phoenix Award for Outstanding Graduate Faculty Member. Each spring, the OSU Graduate and Professional Student Government Association selects an outstanding master’s student, doctoral student, and faculty member to present with the Phoenix Award, its highest honor. The Phoenix Award recognizes exemplary achievement in leadership, scholarship, professional involvement and university and community service. The Phoenix Award is extremely difficult to win because it has campus-wide applicants competing in the same pool.   Since 1985, only two faculty members from the English department have been honored with this prestigious award (Dr. Walkiewicz in 1991 and Dr. Walker in 1998). All winners have their names engraved on the Phoenix Awards plaque located outside the Graduate College offices in Whitehurst Hall. A list of previous Phoenix Award winners is also available at http://gpsga.okstate.edu/faculty.php

In addition to winning the Phoenix award, Dr. Jones is also the winner of the 2008 English Graduate Student Association’s Faculty Award. The EGSA Faculty Award recognizes a full-time English department faculty member whose mentoring has made a positive impact upon graduate students. It is conferred solely by the graduate students of the Oklahoma State University Department of English, and was presented at the EGSA Spring Banquet on April 11.

Dr. Jones has been teaching at OSU since 1987. In addition to regularly teaching courses on John Milton, Shakespeare, and British Literature, Dr. Jones is also the editor of the Milton Quarterly, which publishes in-depth articles, review essays, and shorter notes and notices about Milton's works, career, literary surroundings, and place in cultural history. In striving to be the most reliable and up-to-date source of information about John Milton, it also furnishes reports on conferences, abstracts of recent scholarship, and book reviews by prominent scholars in the field. While its scholarly standard for submissions is high, it insists upon accessibility from all contributors.
