English Department Institutes First-Year Graduate Fellowship Program (05-21-01)

Starting in the fall 2001 semester, the OSU English Department will begin to offer a First-Year Graduate Fellowship to two exceptionally well-qualified incoming graduate students.  These fellowships will be in addition to the stipend, health insurance, and full-tuition waiver that such students would already earn under existing financial aid programs.  The First-Year Fellowship cuts in half the teaching responsibilities of a student receiving a stipend as a teaching assistant.  Thus, a student on the First-Year Fellowship would teach one class or work as a tutor for 10 hours per week rather than teaching two classes or tutoring for twenty hours per week.  This new opportunity is designed to attract promising students to OSU and to help those students make a strong start in their graduate work.  Two awards will be made every spring to students who will begin their studies in the following fall.  The English Department hopes to institute a similar Dissertation-Year Fellowship in the not-too-distant future.
