Faculty member receives prestigious international award
Dr. An Cheng, Assistant Professor in the English Department at Oklahoma State University, received the Daniel Horowitz Award for the best article published in the journal English for Specific Purposes in 2007 for his article “Transferring generic features and recontextualizing genre awareness: Understanding writing performance in the ESP genre-based literacy framework." The article appeared in the third issue of the journal in 2007. It is also available online here.
English For Specific Purposes is an international peer-reviewed journal that has been publishing articles on topics relevant to the analysis and learning of discourse for specific communities since 1980. In 199 2, the Annual Daniel Horowitz Award was established to honor the best article in the journal in a given year, as voted by the members of the Editorial Board. Currently, its Editorial Board consists of 33 members from Australia, France, Hong Kong, Finland, India, Japan, Sweden, Spain, Canada, and the US. Past winners have included such well-renowned scholars as John Swales, Ken Hyland, Alistair Pennycook, Greg Myers, Desmond Allison, Peter Master, and Francoise Salager-Meyer, among others.
Dr. Cheng has been teaching in the English Department since 2005. Classes recently taught by Dr. Cheng include: Genre Theories, Language, and Writing; Teaching Technical and Business Writing; and Writing in the Transnational World. His research interests include genre-based writing instruction, narrative inquiry in writing research, learner autonomy, and language awareness. His recent articles have appeared in English for Specific Purposes, Journal of Second Language Writing, Applied Linguistics, and other journals. He received his PhD from The Pennsylvania State University, University Park.
The award has been announced on the journal's website. The news will be formally announced again in the print version in the third issue of the journal in 2008.
