A Blossoming of Books from English Department Faculty (05-31-99)

All of the OSU English department faculty are active in their fields, regularly presenting research at professional conferences and publishing books and articles in their fields. In 1997, Leonard Leff published another book concerning American film and literature, Hemingway and his Conspirators: Hollywood, Scribners, and the Making of American Celebrity Culture; Robert Mayer's History and the Early English Novel: Matters of Fact from Bacon to Defoe was published by Cambridge University Press; and Peter Rollins edited a collection of critical essays, Hollywood's World War I, published by Popular Press.

In 1998, the long and sometimes seemingly endless labor of writing and editing books is bearing fruit for seven more English department faculty who will have their books published by major university and trade presses. Oklahoma Writing Project co-director Joye Alberts has co-authored with Education professor Gretchen Schwartz, Teacher Lore and Professional Development for School Reform, to be published by Bergin and Garvey in July. Native American literature specialist Eric Anderson's book, American Indian Literature and the Southwest, will appear in the fall, published by The University of Texas Press. Mark Cox's second volume of poetry, Thirty-Seven Years from the Stone will appear in the Pitt Poetry Series, produced by The University of Pittsburgh Press. The University of North Carolina Press will publish William Decker's second book on American literature and culture, Epistolary Practices: Letter Writing in America before the Era of Telecommunications. Already the author of three collections of short stories, Brian Evenson has ventured into the novel form, and his new book, Father of Lies will be published in the fall by Four Walls Eight Windows. The product of a four-part collaboration with American and Mayan Scholars, Susan Garzon's book, The Life of Our Language: Kaqchikel Maintenance, Shift, and Revitalization appeared in spring from The University of Texas Press. This year Lisa Lewis adds another prize to her many distinguished awards for poetry with the prestigious National Poetry Series Prize for her book, Silent Treatment, which will be published by Penguin in June. The University Press of Kentucky has issued a revised edition of Peter Rollins' 1983 collection of essays, Hollywood as Historian, and published earlier this year Hollywood's Indian:The Portrayal of the Native American in Film, also edited by him.
