ENGL 5360.231 Seminar in Screen Studies: The Classical Hollywood Crime Genres / Manon
June - 4 week, MTWR 12:00-2:30, 305 M This graduate seminar will analyze and compare selected Classical Hollywood genres and sub-genres that fall under the broad rubric of “Crime Film.” We will screen and discuss both archetypes and obscurities in each of the following categories: Classical Detective “Whodunit”, Gangster Film, Film Noir, Gothic Melodrama, Police Procedural, and Heist Film. We will also examine some of the paracinematic representations that emerge alongside these genres: news tabloids, True Crime magazines, comic strips, popular novels, television shows, and even children’s books. Several short response essays and a 20-plus page term paper.

June, TR 4:30-10:00, OSU-Tulsa [MCB 2324] This course is intended to provide an awareness of the educational, econopolitical, and sociocultural contexts in which English is taught abroad in an effort to prepare students for a successful English teaching experience overseas. Discussions will also include the linguistic and pedagogical aspects of teaching English as a foreign language as well as the more practical matters like writing successful resumes to find employment overseas.
