2008-2009 Curriculum for the PhD in English
with a Specialization in Rhetoric and Professional Writing

Core Courses required for all students (six hours)

  • ENGL 5013: Introduction to Graduate Studies (TESL/Linguistics or TW version)
  • One teaching methods course ENGL 5213, 5223, 5233, or 5243

Additional Required Courses: two out of the following three (six hours)

  • ENGL 5513: Introduction to Technical Communication (waived if a student has had a similar course at the MA level)
  • ENGL 5353: Studies in the History of Rhetoric
  • ENGL 5140: Seminar in Linguistics

Application Courses (six hours, one or two of the following)

  • ENGL 5520: Internship in Technical Writing (for three or six hours credit)
  • ENGL 5313: Internship in TESL
  • Technical writing or linguistic course with an applied project
  • Applied course from outside the English Department (for example, BCOM 5210: Business Communication Applications)

Focus Area traditionally leading to the PhD Qualifying Exam and dissertation topic: nine hours)

Technical Writing (at least three of the following)

  • ENGL 5523: New Genres in Technical Writing
  • ENGL 5553: Project Management for Professional Publication
  • ENGL 5563: Seminar in the History of Scientific Rhetoric
  • ENGL 5573: Communication Theory
  • ENGL 5583: Environmental Writing
  • ENGL 5593: Styles and Editing
  • ENGL 6500: Studies in Technical Writing

Composition/Rhetoric

  • ENGL 6410: Topics in Rhetorical Theory
  • ENGL 5563: History of Scientific Rhetoric
  • ENGL 5583: Environmental Writing

Nine hours in Secondary Area

Three courses in any area currently available: any area of literature, creative writing, screen studies, technical writing, composition and rhetoric, TESL, and linguistics.

Six hours in Additional Areas

Two courses selected from different programs within the English Department (such as screen studies, literature, creative writing, or theory) or outside the Department.
