2007-2008 Curriculum for the PhD in English with a Specialization in
Rhetoric and Professional Writing
Core Courses required for all students (six hours)
- 5013, Introduction to Graduate Studies (TESL/Linguistics or TW version)
- One teaching methods course (5213, 5223, 5233, or 5243)
Additional Required Courses: two out of the following three (six hours)
- 5513, Introduction to Technical Communication (waived if a student has had a similar course at the MA level)
- 5353, Studies in the History of Rhetoric
- 5140, Seminar in Linguistics
Application Courses (six hours, one or two of the following)
- 5520, Internship in Technical Writing (for three or six hours credit)
- 5313, Internship in TESL
- Technical writing or linguistic course with an applied project
- Applied course from outside the English department (for example, Business Communication 5210; Business Communication Applications)
Nine hours in Focus Area
(traditionally leading to the PhD Qualifying Exam and dissertation topic)
Technical Writing (at least three of the following)
- 5523, New Genres in Technical Writing
- 5553, Project Management for Professional Publication
- 5563, Seminar in the History of Scientific Rhetoric
- 5573, Communication Theory
- 5583, Environmental Writing
- 5593, Styles and Editing
- 6500, Studies in Technical Writing
Composition/Rhetoric
- 6410, Topics in Rhetorical Theory
- 5563, History of Scientific Rhetoric
- 5583, Environmental Writing
Nine hours in Secondary Area
Three courses in any area currently available: any area of literature, creative writing, film, technical writing, composition and rhetoric, TESL, and linguistics.
Six hours in Additional Areas
Two courses selected from different programs within the English Department (such as film, literature, creative writing, or literary theory) or outside the department.
