TESL/Linguistics
"The years I spent at OSU as a graduate student and a teaching assistant/associate have greatly helped me become the Instructor of English that I am today. On the one hand, the courses in TESOL and Applied Linguistics that I took gave me novel insight into language use and language learning/teaching, broadening my understanding of what is happening in the brain when language is being acquired, produced, and processed, respectively. On the other hand, the various sections of Composition that I taught while a TA with the OSU English Department enhanced my ability to deal with classes diverse not only in terms of the students’ goals or import of previously acquired knowledge but also in terms of their mother tongues and ethnic/cultural belonging. Finally, the courses in Linguistics that I taught enabled me to find ways of helping students whose first reaction vis-à-vis grammar and/or language was one of fear and discomfort overcome their initial feeling and come to really understand what language, grammar, and grammaticality are actually about." ~Ludovic Kovalik, April 2006
